A halo borders a center stone with smaller stones. A cluster groups stones into one design. The labels can overlap; compare the center, border and overall outline.

Read the center and the border first
GIA’s setting-style guide distinguishes framed centers from grouped gems; clusters can have geometric shapes or incorporate a halo. Arrangement does not identify gemstone material or weight.
Three questions make the layout clearer
- Is there one visibly distinct center stone, or do several stones together form the main face?
- Is there a separate border around that center, and how much of the face does it occupy?
- Does the product give center-stone dimensions, overall dimensions or both?
Keep the measurements attached to the correct feature. An overall earring face dimension is not automatically the diameter of its center stone. Likewise, a ring of accents can make a face look broad without making the central gem itself that wide. Ask for the missing measurement when it matters instead of calculating it from a close-up.
A historic example of why stone arrangement has a name
GIA describes Napoleon Bonaparte’s two-gem toi et moi gift to Joséphine. Two neighboring focal stones illustrate a different layout from a center with surrounding accents; this is no Miles historic-design claim.
An exact halo example, without merging product facts
The Miles 10mm halo moissanite stud earrings lists Halo Setting, Moissanite, Earring Size: 10mm and Screw Back. Here 10mm is the stated earring-size field; it is not a separately verified center-stone diameter. The current material field lists a 925 Sterling Silver base.
Browse Moissanite Stud Earrings for other face layouts. Compare each exact product’s specification, rather than borrowing the halo pair’s size or closure for a different cluster design.
Does either style prove a better stone?
No. Halo and cluster are layout descriptions. Choose the visual outline you prefer, then check the exact stone material, size, finish and backing as separate purchase facts. For gemstone composition, use the existing moissanite and cubic-zirconia comparison.
