What Does 925 Mean on Jewelry? Silver Content and Marks

925 refers to the sterling-silver standard: 925 parts per thousand, or 92.5%, silver. It describes silver content, not the stone, the surface finish or an independently verified certificate for a particular piece.

Read the number as silver content

The FTC jewelry guidance on silver content uses the 925/1,000 sterling standard. The arithmetic is simple: 925 divided by 1,000 is 0.925. The remaining proportion is not identified by the number alone; do not assume an exact alloy recipe or an allergy claim.

A 925 mark and a complete hallmark are different evidence

The London Assay Office explains that a UK hallmark is a group of marks, including fineness, sponsor and assay-office identification. A standalone 925 inscription is therefore not the same thing as identifying a complete independently applied hallmark. A photo of a stamp cannot by itself establish authenticity.

If independent verification matters to your purchase, ask what documentation or hallmark is actually supplied and which item it identifies. Do not treat a stone report as a test of the entire metal article, or assume a celebrity example proves another product’s composition.

A sterling-silver styling example

Vogue’s 2026 Met Gala account describes Dree Hemingway’s look with sterling-silver touches. It illustrates why material naming can be useful alongside styling; the visible silver color alone is not a purity test.

Base material, finish and stone remain separate

The current Miles round moissanite stud earrings lists Base Material: 925 Sterling Silver, Stone: Moissanite, and Finish: Platinum Plated. These three lines answer different questions. A plated finish can cover a sterling-silver base; it does not turn that base into solid platinum or identify a different gemstone.

  • Read the exact base-material statement.
  • Read the finish separately, even on a silver-tone piece.
  • Check the named stone and the selected variant.
  • Ask about any mark or document that matters to your decision; do not infer it from “925” in a title.
