What Is Pavé Jewelry? Understanding the Setting Name

Silver-tone rectangular stone-set pendant hanging from a chain against black fabric

Pavé describes closely arranged small stones across a jewelry surface. It names the setting style; a separate description identifies the diamond, moissanite, cubic zirconia or other stone material.

What does pavé tell you?

In its guide to jewelry settings, GIA describes close-set small gems secured with little beads or prongs. The word does not specify metal, stone count or total weight.

Pavé, halo and iced out answer different questions

  • Pavé describes close stone placement.
  • A halo borders a center stone and may contain pavé.
  • Iced out describes a stone-set look, not an exact mounting.

When comparing a flat face with a raised design, look at the front and side photographs. Ask where the small stones appear and whether the product explains their mounting. A bright close-up cannot establish the exact stone or the quality of the setting.

A useful surface-coverage example

In GQ’s interview with Jason Derulo, he describes a chain with small diamonds covering its sides. The useful distinction is coverage versus composition; the interview does not establish that its mounting is pavé.

Read the setting and stone separately

The Miles iced dog tag pendant describes a micro-pavé face and offers separately named material-and-stone choices. Its rectangular face is one example of how the arrangement can follow a shape rather than describe a single large gem. Select the exact variant instead of treating the word pavé as a diamond claim.

  • Locate the setting description and the separate stone field.
  • Inspect the full face and side profile, rather than only the brightest crop.
  • Check the selected material and finish independently.
  • If a stone appears missing or the surface catches unexpectedly, stop using the piece and ask for product-specific guidance instead of attempting to reset stones.
